When seizures continue despite trying two or more medications, this is called drug-resistant epilepsy. For many of these patients, surgery offers a real chance to become seizure-free or to have far fewer seizures.
When surgery is considered
- Seizures continue despite correctly taken medication.
- Seizures come from one identifiable area of the brain.
- Seizures are affecting safety, work, study, or independence.
What the evaluation involves
Choosing the right patient is the most important step. Assessment usually includes detailed brain imaging and recordings of the seizures to locate exactly where they begin, so surgery is only recommended when it is likely to help and safe to perform.
Why Dr. Mazen Agour
Dr. Agour completed a dedicated fellowship in epilepsy surgery at the Amrita Institute in India, one of the region's high-volume centres for this work. Every case is reviewed carefully before surgery is advised.
